Smithy Cottage, set in the popular village of Hawkshead and much-loved for its historical links to William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, truly brings something for all.
Entering through the neat courtyard-style garden with comfortable patio furniture, the farmhouse inspired kitchen awaits. The well-equipped kitchen provides everything you could need for a self-catering stay and the large dining table is the perfect place to host a home-cooked breakfast or an evening of family games.
The focal point of this Lakeland cottage is without doubt the recently refurbished lounge. With subtle hues, soft furnishings and comfortable seating for the whole family, this cosy space creates the perfect home from home atmosphere. Kicking back and relaxing has never been as easy with modern day conveniences to hand.
After a day on the fells, you’ll find two sizeable double bedrooms on the first floor, both having access to the shower room on the same level. A third twin bedroom is located on the second floor and is conveniently located opposite the house bathroom, featuring the star of the show – a deep bath. The perfect place to soak away those aches and pains.

- Twin bedroom with TV (advised to take caution with the sloped ceilings).
- Family house bathroom with WC, basin, and handheld shower over the bath.
Need to know
- Parking at Smithy Cottage is for 1 vehicle only and by way of permit in the local car park, just a short walk from the cottage. We also have an allocated space to the rear of the property for short stay unloading. Additional parking passes can be purchased locally.
- 2 well behaved dogs are welcome.
- There is gas central heating throughout.
- A cot and highchair are available, but a stair gate cannot be provided.
- The kitchen has an induction hob – anyone with a pacemaker is advised to take caution and seek professional medical advice.
- This cottage has a £100 security deposit – seek further details in the booking terms and conditions.

Fabulous property
Lovely presented cottage in a perfect location. Cottage was really well equipped and had lovely charm. Many thoughtful touches made to ensure you had a wonderful stay. The village of Hawkshead is easy to get to and for a small village has lots of pubs and shops. Walks straight from the front door and Ambleside, Conitson and Windemere all nearby.

We stayed at Smithy Cottage with Tarn & Fell Escapes who are the most polite, professional and helpful Lakeland holiday cottage company we've dealt with in a long time. Our visits to the Lake District span 36 years using well known local cottage companies that unfortunately lost that sense of personable customer care around 6 years ago, making us feel like a number. So it was very refreshing for Ross & his team to bring that back to life. Smithy Cottage was home from home, clean, warm and well stocked. Lovely welcome gift, thank you. Hawkshead village is one of our favourites and the cottage was right in the centre which was wonderful. We had various members of family staying with us on different days, all who loved it and needless to say they are going to tell the rest of their family and friends about it, word of mouth as they say! We have our eye on Tarn & Fell's Wordsworth Lodge next for a family celebration. Thanks for a fantastic stay at Smithy.

Smashing cottage with some lovely little touches on arrival. What we loved was that is was home from home, with tea and coffee, a few dishwasher tables, dishcloths and everything you needed to get started. The little courtyard garden was a nice place to sit with a coffee (even in the freezing cold!) and I imagine it would be a lovely place to sit in the summer months. On the doorstep to beautiful scenery and the local pub and co-op. My only minor grumble was the frustration at the fire doors which automatically close and nearly chopped the dog in half - but there were door stops available to use. It's a cottage with wooden floor boards that creak so going to the loo in the night can be a noisy affair. The rooms were clean and tidy and the bedrooms were a really decent size! If I could make one improvement it would be to put a waterproof boot box outside so that rather than shoes and boots piling up and tripping us over in the kitchen we could leave them outside, giving us more space and less dirt!

A nice relaxed holiday in fabulous Hawkshead cottage
We had a nice family holiday with our two student sons and two dogs here at Smithy cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and clean, fully equipped and was just right for us and ideal for the dogs. Handily placed near the centre of Hawkshead and so was only a short stroll to any of the nice pubs which was...
We had a nice family holiday with our two student sons and two dogs here at Smithy cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and clean, fully equipped and was just right for us and ideal for the dogs. Handily placed near the centre of Hawkshead and so was only a short stroll to any of the nice pubs which was very welcome after a day out walking. In fact we didn’t use the car at all which was great. Plenty walks starting from the doorstep (might be worth putting some walking guides for people who don’t know the area in the cottage like the pink ones for Latterbarrow etc). We hope to come back - thanks.
Short stay
Excellent cottage in a very central position in Hawkshead. Easy to find with walks on the doorstep. Very comfortable beds and plenty of space to relax in. It was raining so the outdoor seating was unused but would be very useful in good weather

Smithy Cottage is enviably positioned in prime Beatrix Potter territory, with her Hilltop home – now owned by the National Trust – only a short drive away. All while the cobbled streets, traditional pubs, friendly cafes, and independent shops are right on the doorstep of the cottage itself.
You’re also ideally located for exploring some of the Lake District’s most sought after destinations, including Wray Castle, Grizedale Forest and Tarn Hows. Not forgetting the thrill that comes from scaling close-by fells like Latterbarrow, or embracing the local waters and open-water swimming in nearby Windermere.
