Brimming with character and tucked into the cobbled lanes of Hawkshead village, Wordsworth Lodge is a beautifully restored 17th-century Lake District cottage, perfect for family holidays, dog-friendly escapes, and laid-back get-togethers with friends.

This is a home with history – once the lodgings of William Wordsworth as a young student – and today Wordsworth Lodge offers an inviting mix of original features, quirky corners, and cosy comfort, all just steps from the village square.

The sociable ground floor layout is made for groups, with a large open-plan living and dining space, deep leather sofas around a log-burning stove, and a Smart TV for relaxed nights in. There’s a boot room for muddy paws and walking boots, a practical utility room, and a separate WC. The kitchen at Wordsworth Lodge is well-equipped for group cooking, with a Rangemaster cooker, dishwasher, wine fridge, and everything you need to self-cater with ease – ideal for longer stays and group holidays in the Lake District.

You’ll find four individually styled en-suite bedrooms, ideal for mixed groups or extended families. Just up a few steps from the lounge is a snug double with Smart TV and an en-suite shower room. Upstairs, the spacious master bedroom features a super king bed, Smart TV, and en-suite with a bath and walk-in shower. The second upstairs bedroom can be set up as a twin or super king and has its own en-suite with a bath and separate shower. The final bedroom, tucked under the eaves with lovely, exposed beams, offers a restful king-size bed and en-suite shower.

Outside, a small rear courtyard offers space for morning coffee or an evening drink. Two dogs are welcome at Wordsworth Lodge, and private parking for two cars is a short stroll away (no permit required), with space nearby for unloading.

Whether you’re planning a walking holiday, a dog-friendly group getaway, or a relaxing family break in the Lake District, Wordsworth Lodge offers a character-filled base in one of the region’s most charming and well-loved villages.

Lovely family weekend at Wordsworth Lodge
Julie | April 2026
The cottage was booked to celebrate a special family birthday. We found the cottage extremely clean, spacious and comfortable with lots of character and in a great location. I can thoroughly recommend booking with Tarn & Fell Escapes, as they were very courteous and helpful from start to finish, even going above and beyond to drop off items which were...

This accommodation was fantastic. Pristine clean with every facility and equipment you could possibly need! A hidden gem. We loved the communal space alongside the privacy and convenience of separate rooms - all with en-suite. A superb place, location and weekend!

Excellent location in the heart of the village but still very peaceful. 4 excellent en suite rooms suitable for 8 adults. The beds were comfortable and the shower was powerful. Beautiful property, spacious and comfortable with four en-suite bedrooms. The kitchen was fully equipped and the open plan was great for our family get-together. A stone’s throw away from three very excellent pubs/restaurants. We enjoyed a lovely walk to Wray Castle which took 1 hour 15 mins. The property was immaculate….not a spec of dust to be seen anywhere. We...

Wordsworth Lodge was a lovely cottage with everything we needed! Ross let us check in early to decorate the cottage for my mother in laws 30th. The bedrooms were lovely and one of the only cottages I’ve found with all en-suite bathrooms. There’s 3-4 restaurants in walking distance serving lovely food and a Coop round the corner if you need...

Hawkshead

Nestled between Windermere and Coniston, Hawkshead is one of the Lake District’s most charming and historic villages - making Wordsworth Lodge an ideal base for group holidays, walking breaks, and dog-friendly adventures.

Step out to explore cobbled streets lined with cosy pubs, tea rooms, and local shops, or visit the nearby Beatrix Potter Gallery and William Wordsworth’s grammar school. Venture into Grizedale Forest for high ropes and biking trails, or head to Tarn Hows, Latterbarrow, or the shores of Windermere and Coniston for scenic walks, wild swims, and paddleboarding.
