Brimming with character and tucked into the cobbled lanes of Hawkshead village, Wordsworth Lodge is a beautifully restored 17th-century Lake District cottage, perfect for family holidays, dog-friendly escapes, and laid-back get-togethers with friends.
This is a home with history – once the lodgings of William Wordsworth as a young student – and today Wordsworth Lodge offers an inviting mix of original features, quirky corners, and cosy comfort, all just steps from the village square.
The sociable ground floor layout is made for groups, with a large open-plan living and dining space, deep leather sofas around a log-burning stove, and a Smart TV for relaxed nights in. There’s a boot room for muddy paws and walking boots, a practical utility room, and a separate WC. The kitchen at Wordsworth Lodge is well-equipped for group cooking, with a Rangemaster cooker, dishwasher, wine fridge, and everything you need to self-cater with ease – ideal for longer stays and group holidays in the Lake District.
You’ll find four individually styled en-suite bedrooms, ideal for mixed groups or extended families. Just up a few steps from the lounge is a snug double with Smart TV and an en-suite shower room. Upstairs, the spacious master bedroom features a super king bed, Smart TV, and en-suite with a bath and walk-in shower. The second upstairs bedroom can be set up as a twin or super king and has its own en-suite with a bath and separate shower. The final bedroom, tucked under the eaves with lovely, exposed beams, offers a restful king-size bed and en-suite shower.
Outside, a small rear courtyard offers space for morning coffee or an evening drink. Two dogs are welcome at Wordsworth Lodge, and private parking for two cars is a short stroll away (no permit required), with space nearby for unloading.

- Small, enclosed rear courtyard with outdoor seating
- Parking for 2 cars in private spaces, a short walk from the cottage. You can unload closer to the cottage. Additional parking available nearby - charges apply.
Need to know
- Two well-behaved dogs welcome.
- Central heating throughout and underfloor heating on the ground floor.
- All utilities, high-speed Wi-Fi, bed linens and towels are included in your stay.
- Log burner in the lounge – an initial supply of logs is provided, with additional supplies available in the village.
- Travel cot and highchair available on request.
- Parking for 2 cars is a short walk from the property in private spaces; you may unload closer to the door. Additional parking is payable in the village car park.
- Check-in from 4 pm, check-out by 10 am.
- Guests can arrive on any day of the week, with a minimum stay of 2 nights.

Family weekend
This accommodation was fantastic. Pristine clean with every facility and equipment you could possibly need! A hidden gem. We loved the communal space alongside the privacy and convenience of separate rooms - all with en-suite. A superb place, location and weekend!

Loved that every room had en suite and was so clean and tidy. Well done team.
Three things I'd suggest.
1. Many times tripped over the step in the kitchen. Needs a line painting on it or something.
2. Several times we banged our heads coming down the stairs from the two rooms (near the door next to the fireplace) this needs a soft cover or something.
3. The instructions in the book were great except the bins part isn't very clear. Need to add that the locks can stay on on for Tuesday bin day. Also I would move the locks away from the hinge (drill new holes) as we found lots of stuff (incl dog poo bags) in the bin even though it was locked, since the bin can be opened a little even though its locked. Also its not very clear what to do with the bin on bin day. Its next to the parking spaces and with two cars it means that a car is next to the bin.

Very high standard
Lovely cottage recently renovated to very high standards. Everything very clean and decorated very tastefully. A wonderful house for a stay in the lakes and lots of fab walks and pubs nearby. The host gave us early check in as we were in the area earlier which was appreciated. Great to have 4 en-suites with each bedroom. Great size kitchen....

Excellent location in the heart of the village but still very peaceful. 4 excellent en suite rooms suitable for 8 adults. The beds were comfortable and the shower was powerful. Excellent location in the heart of the village but still very peaceful. 4 excellent en suite rooms suitable for 8 adults. The beds were comfortable and the shower was powerful. The lodge had everything we needed for preparing meals and was great for socialising The two parking spaces were big enough for 2 large cars if parked carefully. Hawkshead has a good selection of restaurants, cafes and shops. We can recommend The Queens Head for an evening meal. Poppy Reds was good for breakfast and the Fish and Chip shop was very good. The little ice cream shop was excellent and the ice creams were huge. The Honey pot sold a large selection of foods and gifts. We purchased a map from the visitor centre for £3 which had dog friendly walks from the village. There is a bus that goes to Ambleside and Coniston which meant we didn't always need to use the car. We would 100% recommend Wordsworth Lodge and Hawkshead. It was our first visit to the lake District and we will definitely return.

Tarn & Fell Escapes/ Ross had great communication, always quick to reply and helped accommodate us. They were very helpful when we needed an early check-in time and made this easy to do! The village itself was fantastic, everything you needed on your doorstep, and we made the most of the 3 pubs! There were plenty of walks for us to do around the area and kept us busy. Overall, we loved staying in Wordsworth Lodge and would definitely return!

The space is remarkable
Fantastic place to stay in Hawkshead. Ross was a brilliant host and prepared the house impeccably for us! Very pretty surroundings both in the village and the Lakes more generally. Highly highly recommend!
